A New Chapter for Second Life®
Linden Research, Inc., announced in a press release dated July 9, 2020, it has signed an agreement to be acquired by “an investment group led by Randy Waterfield and Brad Oberwager.“ Jyve CEO and Founder Brad Oberwager and Waterfield Group CEO and Chairman Randy Waterfield will soon join the Board of Directors of Linden Research, Inc. The buyout will include Second Life® and the Linden Lab®'s wholly-owned subsidiary, Tilia.

Prior to Jyve, an on-demand labor platform for retailers and brands based in San Francisco, Calif., Oberwager has founded and/or run Bare Snacks, True & Good! Snacks, Acumins/more.com and Blue Tiger/Open Webs. On January 28, 2019, Forbes reported an ambitious, thriving company, raising $35 million in funding and reaching $400 million in staffing contracts for its independent contractors aka Jyvers.

Back in April, the GENUS project was forced to shut down operations after a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) complaint was filed by an unknown source. On July 4, it was announced the store was back and open for business, but not for long. After receiving a second DMCA complaint, Friday, July 10, GENUS Project's store and inventory were removed from Second Life.
“I got a complaint again. I need to close everything again. I’m going to court and I want to settle this. I think it will take time.”

Customers now wait for further announcements and the community can't help wondering if this second closure will be temporary or permanent.

The Waterfield Group, one of the largest private financial organizations in the U.S., operates as a financial services company. Trading, investments, banking, and asset management services are offered by the Waterfield Group to customers worldwide.
So what this means for Second Life®? Assuming we won't see immediate changes, apprehensive residents are speculating on how this acquisition will negatively impact Second Life®, but there is also hope for a bigger and improved platform; Linden Lab® CEO Ebbe Altberg states in the press release "...an opportunity to continue growth and expansion for Second Life® and our money services business Tilia.” Users have flooded the Community Forum with questions and concerns. The “LINDEN RESEARCH, INC. TO BE ACQUIRED“ forum thread reveals 22 pages of an on-going heated discussion and what the future might bright for the 17-year old virtual world.

COVID-19 has yet cancelled another event. I wasn't surprised to hear about my local Renaissance festival being postponed until next year due to the pandemic. If you never been to a (real life) Renaissance festival you are missing out on the fun, and I highly recommend it to all the medieval/gorean/ fantasy role-players. Art, music, food, fun, unique merchants and performances and amazing cosplay are the cornucopia of these social outdoor fairs.
Chances are that this year, you won't be able to attend a Renaissance festival in real life, but there will be one in Second Life® – Huzzah! Merchants, bloggers and volunteers are welcome to apply at slrenaissancefestival.com on specific dates (https://slrenaissancefestival.com/guidelines/eventtimeline/). The SL Renaissance Festival will be held from Friday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. SLT/PDT (8 p.m. EST) to Sunday, Oct. 4, featuring auctions, hunts, a Royal Court Gala and more. This event will help support the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
