What is Missing in the Beauty Industry of Second Life

It is time to have a break from fantasy and skip to a different fantasy…more modern like. If you have been indifferent to The Forge’s most recent releases, you really should start paying attention now – especially if you enjoy dressing up your doll with sexy, cute clothing and you also like to show it off. The Forge has not only become a staple store for fantasy role-players but is also very popular in the urban side of Second Life. Regardless of where you play, we all must admit that Deccan’s designs are stunning and I always look forward to see what he will create next.

Clothing is not the only accessory that makes your avatar glow. Jewelry, shoes, gadgets and makeup also play an important role in your avatar’s looks.  I admit that I spend endless hours changing, trying, mixing and matching; it’s one of my favorite things to do in Second Life!

While I was organizing my makeup folders just a few days ago, I’ve noticed that particular industry has not changed much. Second Life clothing and hair changed over the years from alpha to mesh, jewelry developed texture HUDs but yet makeup options are stagnant. There are gorgeous makeup packs out there but applying makeup in your doll’s face should be much more than pressing a button – It is time to come up with fresh ideas.

I’m no makeup mogul but I do hoard quite a bit of makeup and I spend endless hours watching Youtube's beauty gurus. The experience of trying new products and experimenting with makeup is super-fun for me, and I think it’s time to bring some of that experience to Second Life.  I have a couple of ideas for our makeup creators.

  • Let’s start playing with makeup palettes. I would love to see makeup creators selling palettes with a system that would let you pick your colors and blend them the way you want - click the first color, click the second color and watch the magic happen. Can we make this possible in Second Life?
  •
  • Brushes are an important tool when applying makeup in real life so how can we make it work for the virtual world? Considering that makeup brushes have different sizes, a particular brush could be used to apply a particular amount of blush (or other makeup) on your avatar’s face. The bigger the brush, the bigger your rosy cheeks can be. Brush packs could be sold with a range of sizes, offering proportional amounts of makeup.
  •
  • A good mascara is the answer to my prayers – who doesn’t love long, lush eyelashes? Personally, I love quality mascaras that allows me to build-up; the more you apply, the longer your eyelashes will be. This might be a great idea for a mascara HUD and don’t stick to black only. There are beautiful colors out there that can be used in your mascara.

  • Having avatar animations when you click to apply the makeup would be cool to see too!
