The year is 336 AD. The streets of Rome celebrate the Augustalia in honor of Augustus, the first Roman emperor. During his reign, Augustus changed nearly every aspect of Roman life. From taxation and new laws to a network of roads, Augustus was acclaimed a hero, bringing peace and prosperity during a period known as the Pax Romana.
Augustalia is celebrated with great splendor – games, gymnastic and musical contests last for several days around the magnificent temple to Augustus near the Forum. This centrally located open area is surrounded by public buildings and colonnades, lined with marketplaces where craftsmen create and sell their goods.
We also mourn the death of  Constantine the Great, and the empire is now divided. There is word of meetings and disputes between the sons of Constantine. War is imminent, but while there is peace, let us celebrate what was once a flourishing commonwealth.
