News Recap: The New Regions and the Grand Voyage to the Cloud

Second Life® Asks for Patience amid Migration to the Cloud
The migration of Second Life®’s simulators and services to the Cloud (AWS Services) has been a massive and on-going project. All of SL® user data will soon be transferred and stored in AWS machines owned by Amazon. Some questions continue to remain unanswered, but users should see a number of improvements throughout the grid by the end of 2020.

While the uplift of inventory and group chat services remained mostly stable with no sign of major bugs or failures, the gradual migration has created noticeable service disruptions in other areas. Oz Linden’s “Uplift Update” blog post offers a better insight on the latest developments. Region crossing, group chat and avatar bake services have been improved with updates soon to be deployed. The team continues to be optimistic and satisfied with the overall grid experience during this time, however teleport failures and Marketplace glitches continue to be a challenge.

Developers are committed to deliver the best virtual world experience for residents, but as the uplift to the cloud continues in the weeks to come, residents should expect temporary disruptions until the project is completed and stable. More than half of the regions should be transferred to the Cloud by Wednesday, Nov. 11 – click Help > About on your viewer to know if your region has been uplifted to the Cloud. Transferred region will show “AWS” in the location details.

New Private Regions for Sale
As the Cloud Uplift continues and regions are being moved to AWS simulators, Linden Lab® gave us an update on region inventory. In recent months, Second Life® had an extremely limited region inventory due to increased demand, but now new regions are being added every day. Although quantities continue to be limited, more regions will become available over time. Potential buyers must visit the Support Portal and fill out a ticker under the Land & Region category.

New regions featuring Stilt Linden Homes

In addition, Second Life® has added an impressive continent featuring brand new Stilt Linden Homes. Inspired by shore-side stilt homes along the southeastern U.S. geographical areas, these beautiful homes were available for preview at the SL17B event in June 2020 and now they are finally here. As the team continues to work on final details, the continent is closed for public access - users are able to spot the new regions in the map.
