Fall Brings New Life to Second Life - the Blogger Network, Firestorm Updates and More

There are several updates since last Friday’s Linden Lab announcement, and residents are excited to finally see some of the revealed initiatives going live. The Firestorm viewer has also released an update to support the new Bakes on Mesh feature with a few other perks.

Firestorm, Bakes on Mesh and Discord

If you are a Firestorm user, you probably received a message to update your viewer - these are major updates that will allow your viewer to support the Bakes on Mesh feature and substantially reduce your avatar rendering cost. If you chose to skip the update, you will start spotting avatars wearing funny-looking blue and yellow textures. It will be a matter of time until the marketplace is flooded by BoM-supported merchandise and all residents will be forced to install a newer version of Firestorm. Get familiar with the Bakes on Mesh and visit Slink, Maitreya, or Blueberry stores to purchase your first BoM products.
With this update, Firestorm also features an external note card editor. Residents can now use text editing software such as Microsoft Word or NotePad and upload the files directly to Second Life. There are no charges associated with these uploads.
The new Firestorm version also includes the ability to link your Discord account to your Second Life. The popular VoIP application can now display your Second Life online status, user name, location and session length. You must have both clients running when linking both accounts.
OpenSim users will continue to use an older Firestorm version until a developer is available to assist with future updates.

Second Life Blogger Network

Independent bloggers/vloggers or content creators that own a blog, are now invited to join the SLBN. To be part of this project, you must fill out this form and agree to all terms and conditions. Once the form is submitted, Linden Lab will begin to monitor your blog posts; selected posts will be featured in the new Community News Feed, the official viewer login page, and social media platforms. Adult content will not be considered. Instead, Linden Lab will focus on promoting posts that highlight the Second Life experience through high-quality photography, articles, videos and other acceptable content.

If your blog features occasional adult content or nudity you may apply, but be aware that Linden Lab will only promote posts that are compliant with the content guidelines. You can also opt-out of the SLBN anytime you want, by submitting the same form and check the opt-out section located at the very bottom.

Marketplace, Last Names and Cloud Migration

Linden Lab’s recent blog entry, “Web User Group and Updates!”, published Monday, Sept. 30, shares the latest developments on the return of Last Names, Cloud Migration and the latest Marketplace improvements.
“First, we need to acknowledge that a large portion of our time has been spent making on-going back-end changes that our Residents may never notice directly, but which will provide a much more secure and pleasant experience for all going forward. For example, we’ve already completed a full-scale migration of multiple web services away from our dedicated hardware colo and into the cloud. Others have been moved from third-party vendors to an in-house implementation. Still, others have been decoupled from their previous dependencies into stand-alone services. This is all part of our long term plan to move all of our services, from the web properties to the Second Life grid itself, providing us greater reliability, flexibility, and security across the board. We’ll let you try to guess which services have already been migrated - we’re betting you’ll never know the difference!

Second, we’re extremely pleased to say that in the last month we’ve made significant progress in laying the foundations for the long-awaited Name Changes feature.  All of our teams have been working hard on preparing the grid and all of our systems to accommodate account name changes, both first and last. We’re not quite ready to release all the details yet, but suffice to say that if you’ve ever wanted to change up your account name for whatever reason (and we know you have!) STAY TUNED.

Finally, our continuing dedication to improving the Marketplace experience continues. Last month we were very excited to release the new Store Managers functionality. And this month, we’ve been refining that experience, as well as adding more new features for Merchants such as in-world messaging when an item is sold. But we haven’t forgotten the most important part of the Marketplace, the customers! For them, we’ve added a “Gifts Received” page with details about what the items are, who sold it, who bought it, any gift message, with much-requested options for self-service redelivery!”
These new features will impact your Second Life in one way or another. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I’m confident to say that Bakes on Mesh will be beneficial to the grid. Role-play and combat in Second Life has been affected over the years and as a result of that, we saw a number of residents leaving to play in faster, better fighting games. It is crucial for the Linden Lab to keep their focus on ways to improve and keep the system as stable as possible. Hopefully, Bakes on Mesh is the beginning of a series of significant improvements that will encourage the return of e-sports enthusiasts and attract new users to Second Life.
