We live in times where our society is deeply divided along political lines. Smaller communities and ethnic groups are often affected but I think, it was much worse centuries ago. Over the years, Second Life has become a safe harbor for many of these communities and it’s something we should definitely praise. The LGBT, LGBTI, LGBTIQ and LGBT+ communities have been a loyal presence in SL, and you can find the groups about anywhere, including right here, in our role-play spectrum.
Just 50 years ago, gay Americans faced an anti-gay legal system which resulted in violent demonstrations. The Stonewall riots were the most important LGBT liberation movement in the U.S., and this month, we celebrate and remember this uprising on its anniversary. June is the LGBT Pride Month and it should be celebrated by all - dignity, equal rights, self-affirmation, sexual diversity and gender variance should be something all of the 7.7 billion people on Earth should recognize and stand for. Unfortunately, we all know this is not the case.
Although Second Life is an open-minded virtual world, we come across a few judgmental residents with low tolerance for someone that look, acts or sound different from them. On all my years in Gor, I’ve witnessed a few eyebrow-raising comments and bullying behavior that in my personal opinion should be reprimanded. Second Life Terms of Service (ToS) or the Community Standards (CS) clearly condemns any type of harassment, assault or defamation of users or groups. If you are a victim or if you witness this type of situation, please file a report at the time it happens. Linden Labs takes these reports very seriously and in no time, action will be taken.
But, smile big. It’s Pride Month. The Second Pride Festival will be open until tomorrow to celebrate the 15th annual celebration of Second Pride in Second Life. If you decide to “stay in” and role-play in Gor, be sure you visit these specific LGBT-friendly gorean regions and support groups. Show your support by donating a few of your $L, role-play, raid, smile big but most importantly…be kind to one another.
