Viking Age

The Vikings are without a doubt one of my favorite ancient civilizations, and therefore one of my favorite genres of role-play in SL. The Norsemen left such unique legacy that inspired countless authors, musicians and painters. Just look at the Gor saga from John Norman where Torvaldsland lies in the north of Gor as a harsh, rocky land that resembles the Scandinavian countries on Earth or the epic fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, where the Ironborn were also inspired by these seafaring marauders. Drama series like “Game of Thrones” and “Vikings” continue to be popular TV shows across all ages and genders. I watch, read, and breathe every single one of them.

Back in 2008 (yeah, I’m that old) when I started my role-playing adventures in SL, I was fortunate to play in Old Norse role-play sims across the grid. I had a blast and made great memories. As the years went by and these same Old Norse sims slowly vanished, you could occasionally find small groups of Vikings players that remained true to their characters during the tournaments at the old Sparta sim. At one point, it was impossible to find a sim or group to play in, and my only options to “play Viking” were in gorean or Game of Thrones themed sims. During this time of transition, many of the best fighters in Gor came from Old Norse role-play sims but unfortunately, the role-play wasn’t quite the same.

The TV show’s popularity seems like it stirred things a little, and just recently, I’ve found several Viking themed sims in SL. Could this be a comeback?

I visited each of them and compiled a quick list for you, me, and all the Norsemen souls out there. Kudos for Little Bones and Luas for providing the right wardrobe that helped me survive the cold of the north.

“Vikings” new episodes will be back in the History Channel, Wednesday, Nov. 28. “Game of Thrones” will return in HOB for its six-episode, eighth and final season in (April?) 2019.

“The period from the earliest recorded raids in the 790s until the Norman conquest of England in 1066 is commonly known as the Viking Age of Scandinavian history. Vikings used the Norwegian Sea and Baltic Sea for sea routes to the south. The Normans were descended from Vikings who were given feudal overlordship of areas in northern France—the Duchy of Normandy—in the 10th century. In that respect, descendants of the Vikings continued to have an influence in northern Europe. Likewise, King Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, had Danish ancestors. Geographically, a Viking Age may be assigned to not only Scandinavian lands (modern Denmark, Norway and Sweden), but also territories under North Germanic dominance, mainly the Danelaw, including Scandinavian York, the administrative center of the remains of the Kingdom of Northumbria, parts of Mercia, and East Anglia. Two Vikings even ascended to the throne of England, with Sweyn Forkbeard claiming the English throne in 1013–1014 and his son Cnut the Great becoming king of England 1016–1035.
