Editorial: Second Life®, Doja Cat, and the Montero

There is a lot to unpack after Lab Gab’s special episode and the “Meet the Lindens” talk show series. The Linden Lab® management team was kind to spend time answering resident’s questions, celebrate a successful year and chat about future projects. As a viewer and longtime resident, I was excited to see a positive attitude and the enthusiasm to reveal what’s next for Second Life®. The curtain was lifted in many topics, but just enough to make residents engaged and eager for more. Residents can expect great things from Second Life®, and I'll be along for the ride.  

The appearance of Linden Lab® Executive Chairman Brad Oberwager (Oberwolf Linden) on Strawberry’s Lab Gab was a much-needed breath of fresh air. Up until this interview, the investment group led by Randy Waterfield and Brad Oberwager, who acquired Linden Lab® in January, and most importantly, their vision for Second Life, were very much unknown — it was good for the community to connect and listen to a real person behind the corporate wall and how concerned they are with the well-being of the community. How the community reacts to new features and changes was also something Oberwager pointed out with great importance. Do I love this customer service? I sure do, but the next few months will tell us how exactly will all play out.  

Growth and development were some of the key words heard throughout the talk show series. For some residents, change can be difficult, but it is important to keep our platform attractive for future generations and ensure profits to pay salaries and bills. Having a stagnant virtual world is not the answer and we must move on to better, bigger things — embrace the changes and the future fellow residents because it is coming. The Meet the Lindens and Lab Gab sessions gave us an insight into what we'll be seeing in the near future:  

  •     iOS SL Mobile App with a public beta to be released very soon  
  •     New user experience — a new Welcome Island for new residents using the default Second Life viewer is now open. Visit it HERE.
  •     New mesh starter avatars and easy customization for new residents  
  •     Linden homes expansion including a V2, continent seasonal cycles, creation of sub-continents and more  
  •     New land products and region options. Event tier regions to be tested soon.  
  •     Possibility of updating the viewer code and rendering system  
  •     Performance improvements on Search and Group Chat features  
  •     Enhancements on the Word Map  

Linden Lab® Vice President of Marketing Brett Linden and his team are actively promoting their products and services to communities, business companies, and organizations. Partnerships with ES. TV, American animation studio Titmouse, Inc., adult oriented television network Adult Swim and the NFL Alumni Association are just the start of an ambitious take on cultural trends which, if you ask me, is the right place to be. Symbiotic partnerships can promote both sides as they reach new audiences in the comfort of our world of wonders. Maybe one day we may see a popular singer perform in Second Life®? I can picture Lil Nas X’s avatar in Second Life® sliding down the pole to hellfire at the sound of his latest hit, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” — does anyone have his phone number? Make room in the budget please!  


As part of Linden Lab®’s marketing strategy, Levitate was hired to produce "Second Life, Children of Creation," a stunning video commercial that won four Telly Awards. There are currently segments of the video on www.secondlife.com, but the full piece could be released in a near future throughout social media. Additionally, paid advertisement, social media and blogs are also taken into consideration by the Marketing Department, but I personally wish to see a good injection of fresh content into some of the social media outlets favored by young adults such as TikTok and Snapchat. In my opinion, these two social media sites could use a lot of TLC assuming this is the target audience — content is too stale or not relevant for this particular crowd. Make a cool-looking avatar dance at the sounds of Doja Cat or show how supportive you are of the LGBTQ+ community and you may go viral overnight. In the case of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, I think diversifying the content would be beneficial, as I feel that at times it's stuck in a loop between picture of the day and the Second Life® Book Club. Tips for new and veteran residents, business and education solutions, a “how to” and “did you know” post series, highlighting other cultures and content creators outside the U.S. or advertising live events are examples of the content I would love to see more often. Although there is room for improvements, let's not forget the fantastic job SL's Marketing Team has done in recent years on a number of advertising platforms (especially with Strawberry Linden on board) — cheers to many years of adventures and successful years in Second Life®.
